Journal 8: Chapter 18-20

Typography is such a huge component of design that sometimes it’s easy to find a nice font or typeface and continue to use that one in a number of designs. (Especially if it’s part of a brand’s identity these days). I have never studied typography immensely or fell in love with it, I love illustrations and visual elements, but seeing Herb Lubalin’s typographic work definitely gave me a shift in visual inspiration.

His logo work especially is something definitely on another tier, and as a young designer, would hugely be an inspiration and a level to match. The amount of creativity, simplicity, while balanced, in each one is remarkable.

According to this article: https://www.uniteditions.com/blogs/news/ten-things-you-should-know-about-herb-lubalin, Lubalin was color-blind and ambidextrous— making his story even more intriguing. Granted, you don’t need color to make great designs, type and illustrations, the lack of distinguishing color must have definitely attributed to his work and black/white designs.
